SiloSmashers Employee Wellness Community

SiloSmashers believes that employees are a company's greatest asset. When Angela Drummond founded SiloSmashers in 1992, she made a commitment to invest in her employees' health and wellness through ongoing activities to promote physical fitness and a healthy work environment. Being a fitness enthusiast herself, Ms. Drummond has always supported workplace wellness at SiloSmashers and she demonstrates that support on a daily basis.

SiloSmashers' Employee Wellness Community, created by and for employees, provides programs designed to foster excellent physical and mental health through a sound program of good nutrition, moderate regular exercise, stress management, and preventive maintenance. The Wellness Community is committed to encouraging employee health and wellness and supporting one another in "getting and staying fit." Our latest wellness program is entitled Destination: Fitness. Through this new initiative, individuals or groups of employees are encouraged to choose specific destinations on a US map. They log their steps daily, anytime 24/7, using SiloSmashers pedometers, to work toward reaching their destination goals. Employee progress is tracked on a large map displayed both in the office and on the company's Intranet. Incentive awards will be given out at SiloSmashers' quarterly meetings, to employees and groups who meet their goals.

The Destination:Fitness program also includes a variety of planned physical activities; such as, exercise classes, bike rides, and volleyball games. There is a library of available reading materials, both printed and electronic, that includes monthly newsletters, an interactive recipe database, articles, and local area trail guides. Through Aetna, SiloSmashers' Insurance Provider, the company has partnered with local health clubs and weight loss firms who have offered discounted memberships to the staff as part of the program. SiloSmashers holds monthly "brown bag" lunch meetings for employees that feature special guests speaking on a variety of topics including; exercise, nutrition, first aid/CPR, and sleep and breathing issues, to keep participants motivated to succeed. Taking it a step further, SiloSmashers has replaced chips and heavy desserts with fruit and vegetable platters at luncheon meetings, and has made modifications to vending machine options throughout the office to include 25% healthier alternatives. SiloSmashers also provides employees with flexible schedules and tele-work options to assist with lowering overall stress levels.

In addition, SiloSmashers has a dedicated Wellness Community Intranet Site that includes newsletters, articles, surveys, discussion group topics, links to specific health-related websites and information from Aetna Health & Wellness.
